Properties of Sandy, Loamy and Clayey Soils

Sandy Soil - Loamy Soil - Clayey soil

• Soil Particles (%) } Sandy clay and slit - 80 less than 20 - 40 to 50 ,50 to 60 - Less than 40, Greater than 60

• Texture - Particles loosely packed ( light soil) - Intermediate - Particles strongly stuck together ( heavy soil)

• Air content - High because of large pore spaces among particles - Intermediate - Low because of small and closely packed particles

• Porosity - High - Intermediate - Poor (Water logged soil)

• Water Content (%) - About 25 ( nearly all this water can be absorbed by roots of plants) - About 50 ( most of this water can be absorbed by roots of plants) - Greater than 40 (only a small amount of this water can be absorbed by roots of plants)

• Capillary action - Low - Intermediate - High

• Humus content (%) - Very little - 5 to 10 - Variable

• Ability to support plant growth - Poor - Very good - Poor to fair
